Francky Du Berlais gave trainer Peter Bowen a seventh win in the Betway Summer Plate with a brilliant display at Market Rasen on Saturday afternoon under son, James.
This season’s Clarke Chase winner underperformed at Cartmel last time out but won with plenty in hand in Lincolnshire to extend his handler’s domination on the July contest, seeing off Neil Mulholland’s Exelerator Express by seven-and-a-half lengths.
Previous Aintree winner and hot-favourite Captain Tom Cat carries top-weight to fifth, with Pink Eyed Pedro and Templepark picking up minor honours.
Prior to the contest, Pembrokeshire’s Bowen was full of praise for his charge ahead of his English exploits and was confident in his chances.
He told the Sporting Life last week: “We do target the race every year as lots of our horses run very well at that time of year. It is also a good race for novices coming through and that is basically what Francky Du Berlais is – a novice coming up.
“He won over two mile four at Uttoxeter but he just got there at the end. I don’t think going a little further will do him any harm so I’m quite hopeful with him.”
