In celebration of Brian Ellison turning 69, today’s rewind focuses on arguably the best chaser to ever come out of his yard.
Definitely Red claimed six Graded successes for the Yorkshire-based trainer, including the Cotswold Chase and two victories in the Many Clouds Chase.
His second victory in the 3m1f contest was his final Graded victory in his career and was arguably one of his finest performances in a career that spanned over eight years.
Having to concede 6lbs to all of his rivals, he took off from the start and dictated the pace from the front.
Coming into the home straight, the gelding began to assert his dominance at two out and pulled away from Double Shuffle in the run-in.
Definitly Red claimed success by four and a half lengths and it would be the last success he would claim at Aintree.
The gelding would feature in the Cheltenham Gold Cup that season, but he would be brought down at the tenth fence.
Brian Ellison’s star would enter the winners’ enclosure once more, landing the Listed Premier Chase at Kelso in February 2020, before being retired after the 2021 Grand National.
